Our original organization started in 1946, with an initial membership of 30 magazine publishers and advertising companies. The following years saw great activity in the magazine industry, and in 1952, now with 55 members, we changed our name to the Japan Magazine Advertising Society and dedicated ourselves to serving as liaison and promoter of goodwill between the magazine world and the advertising world. By 1955, with magazine advertising heating up even more, our membership roll had increased to 118 members from 81 different companies. In 1963, when major magazine firms were registering with the Japan Audit Bureau of Circulations and thereby establishing the credibility of the magazine industry, membership had risen to 150 companies.
In 1974―by which time we had 793 members from 243 companies―we registered as a public-service corporation and adopted the name we use today: the Japan Magazine Advertising Association (JMAA). In April 2012, when authorized General Incorporated Association, we had the membership of 93 magazine publishers and 121 advertising companies. And October, 1st, 2022, the membership of us is magazine publishers 66, advertising companies 70. JMAA plays the main role of Japan's magazine publishers and advertising firms.
